In the opening of the 3 short races ‘Lizzard’ grabbed a poor start, exiting the sandy first turn in 16th position. Getting down to business the Kiwi blasted his Yamaha around the quarry to ultimately cross the finish line in 5th position. In moto 2 Coppins was slightly better off getting out the gate, however exiting turn one just inside the top 10 the Monster Energy Yamaha rider once again had his work cut out. Within just a handful of laps ‘Lizzard’ was up into 6th place and charging down on 5th position, which he was able to take away from Verbruggen on the final laps. The 3rd and final race of the day would see a superb ride from the New Zealander. Recovering from yet another poor start Coppins was on a mission, and within no time had himself firmly in the mix with the top runners. With a few laps remaining Coppins was inside the top 5 and flying as he passed Goncalves for 4th. Then with 2 laps remaining ‘Lizzard’ made the pass on eventual championship winner Desalle, before getting onto the back wheel of DeDycker, crossing the finish line in 3rd position and claiming 3rd overall in the championship. Coppins gave his views on the day: “Today was good, I really enjoyed the track. It was really sandy in the quarry and then almost hard packed up top. Also nice jumps and hills, which made it fun. My starts were just bad all day which left me fighting through the pack. The last race was good as I managed to come right through the pack to third, just onto the back of DeDycker.” Josh Coppins is now on his way to Italy for a couple of days testing with Yamaha, ahead of this coming weekend’s prestigious MX of Nations.
